Reading Your Product Labels

Reading your Labels

How do you determine if a product is best for you and if the ingredients are safe for your hair? Well, with the use of a hair oil chart and a few other tools, plus trial and error, you will soon learn more about your hair including what oils and styling manipulation is best in order to preserve the health and length of your hair. Read your Product Labels.

This is my favorite products ATM – Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Learn how to check the label of products by following this example.

Shea Moisture – Curl Enhancing Smoothie Ingredients

Deionized Water , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil , Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado) , Vegetable Glycerin , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Silk Protein , Ammonium Salt , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil (Carrot) , Sorbitol Esters , Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5) , Caprylyl Glycol , Essential Oil Blend , Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Just by reading the ingredients, you get a sense that most if not all of these ingredients are natural and/or organic. However, if you are not sure, use this tool to rate a specific ingredient listed in the label. (mainly for skin products, but still has useful information)
This website is easy to use and allows you to search each ingredient. It gives the ingredient a rating from BEST to POOR. (best, good, average, poor) It also has some products listed that have already been rated overall. Search by product name and category to determine if a product is good for you.
Sometimes, it’s easy to pick up a product and keep it moving, but unless you are shopping at an organic store where the majority of items are natural or organic products, then you are susceptible to grabbing a product that can have negative effects on your skin and your health. I would also endorse Hekalu Naturals for body soaps and body butters. I have not tried the other products but I would try it because I know that the products are all natural and will not be harmful to my body unless I’m allergic to a particular natural/organic ingredient.
Yes, I know reading the labels of products can be a chore, but once you’ve done the research, you can find products and even a product line that you can stick with and use for continuous hair, skin and nail care. It gets easier as you build a regimen. Just be sure to build a healthy regimen so you can preserve yourself and be an effortless beauty.
