The Good, the Bad and the Glycerin

The Good, the Bad and the Glycerin! As you may already know, vegetable glycerin is odorless, colorless and is sweet to the taste. It dissolves in water and alcohol and it makes hair and skin feel soft and moisturized with its smooth and creamy feeling texture. This is why many hair and skin products use glycerin.

Raise your hands if you use glycerin. Glycerin is probably the most touch and go product for natural hair. Whether you are using it to combat frizz, create the look of smooth hair or to moisturize, you can achieve this with Vegetable Glycerin. Read more to learn about the PROS & CONS of Vegetable Glycerin and how you can use this product.

Here's the nitty gritty in quick bullet points for the readers who enjoy to skim information

Vegetable Glycerin PROS:

* Moisturizing & Sealing Moisture in hair
* Fights Frizz
* Smooth Finish to hair
* Mixed with regular body lotion for supple and healthy looking skin
* Use for dry flaky scalp

Vegetable Glycerin CONS:

* Does not Repair split ends because split ends cannot be repaired! Split ends should be trimmed/cut off
* Should be cautiously used in dry weather (really hot or really cold weather) mix with jojoba oil to help prevent drying out of hair
* Might create flaky scalp (that's the touch and go characteristic of glycerin)

How to Use Glycerin: (Trial and Error)

* In LOC Method or LCO Method (whichever you use), Glycerin is best used in the L phase
* Mix equal parts of water to glycerin and add a few drops of an essential oil (rosemary, lavender, lemon grass)

* If you try this mixture and it leaves your hair feeling sticky, use less vegetable glycerin (keep notes of the measurements use so that you know what works best for you and to avoid starting your trial and error process over again)
* If you try this mixture and your hair still feels dry, it may be that the climate is drying and the glycerin is pullin the moisture from your hair leaving your skin and hair brittle and flaky

At the end of the day, do we have time for glycerin? Do the pros outweigh the cons for persons who are willing to test their hair with several mixes of glycerin before they can get it right? You decide. I can always have use for vegetable glycerin. The last bottle my boyfriend purchased me from now.com is gone. I used most of it on my skin. I tried unsuccessfully using glycerin in my hair...My hair felt pasty, clammy, sticky, but after learning more and more about it, I'm realizing that I tried the product in the wrong season AND I needed to use less of the product in my mixture. Glycerin is helpful in hair growth and since length is a sought after goal for many persons, including myself, why not try it again. I have tried my hand at several mixes, many of which have worked as conditioning treatments and protein treatments. What's wrong with one more? All hair types can use Vegetable Glycerin. As for products that have glycerin in its labels, that's a whole other post. Stay tuned for the upcoming post about Glycerin in products next week.
